Quick facts about Serial Ports.
-
They can either be a 9 pin or 25 pin connection but most likely 9 pin connection.
-
Maximum length is about 50 feet but engineers recommended 35 feet.
Things you can do if your com port goes out.
-
Reboot, depending on the computer, there is a chance that the computer has not been rebooted in months.
-
Go through the device manager (rt click on my computer>properties>”hardware” tab>”device manager” button> click on the “+” by com&LPT) and disable and re-enabling the com port
-
USB to seral port device is usually recommended as a quick fix, but remember to install the device driver. (if you do not have it loaded, you can usually download the driver from the manufacture website.) These devices are USB port sensitive, remember where you plug it into.
-
Reload the com port driver, not sure how to do this one, but I have heard of it being done successfully.
Depending on the software package you are utilizing you can rename a different com port if your software is needing to be a specific number. This can be accomplished though the device manager.
